In order to look up new words, either as you come across them or as you think of words that you’d like to know in Japanese, a Japanese dictionary will serve you well. If you learn better with a physical textbook or with someone directing you, it’s worth it to invest in those things.
It’s important to be honest with yourself about what kinds of resources are most conducive to your learning. Many of these resources are free, and you can certainly learn a lot of Japanese for free! However, more extensive resources and especially resources that give you feedback will typically cost money. These resources are organized into categories based on essential aspects of the Japanese language – aspects such as grammar, pronunciation, listening, and reading. Users have to use multiple apps or different versions of the same app in order to learn how to read, write, pronounce all three alphabets.If you want to start learning Japanese, or have already started and want to know what tools are out there to help you get to the next level, you’ve come to the right place!.The is little to no focus on user onboarding and those that had no prior experience learning Japanese found it overwhelming or confusing.The apps often did not include stroke order for kana (both hiragana and katakana) or kanji.Users had to find external sources in order to learn how to write.Some apps make the assumption that users are already familiar with the Japanese alphabets.Considering users’ main motivations for learning Japanese and the apps that are popularly used, I discovered some major pain points: Additionally, users stressed that grammar, reading, and writing, were the three most important aspects for them in learning Japanese. I found that most people surveyed used Duolingo everyday or almost everyday, as well as used mnemonic devices to assist in memorizing the alphabets. In order to understand target users, I surveyed six people who had studied Japanese for varied amounts of time from 1 week to 2 years, in regards to how they used apps to supplement their Japanese learning, and what methods they used outside of app usage.
